Icon Agency’s Canberra and Melbourne digital teams were engaged in early 2021 to consolidate three websites (Infrastructure, Regional Development, and Communications) for the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications (DITRDC) into a single, logically structured infrastructure.gov.au site.
Built on the GovCMS Drupal 9 SaaS platform, and with over 10,000 content elements to manage, the project required careful planning, a full IA and content audit, and development of custom scripts to auto migrate content from three separate platforms. We also developed custom modules to make the CMS more user friendly and undertook some manual migration.
Achieving alignment of 59 business areas was no small feat. With nine months to complete the project, Icon stood up a newly designed site in six weeks to direct visitors to a wide range of government services and information while the main project was undertaken. A top-level design system and theme was then produced to work across all content modules to ensure consistency of layout and brand.
The site was developed to meet WCAG 2.0 AA Accessibility as per government requirements, with accreditation supplied by a third-party accessibility specialist.
The final site launched in September 2021 with positive feedback from all stakeholders, and will continue to be refined via a series of sub-projects.
