Website design and development for Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

A new digital home for Australia’s largest centre for cancer care

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

A new digital
home or Australia’s
largest centre for
cancer care

Icon won a competitive pitch to redesign the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (PMCC) website based on our health sector experience with the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and Melbourne Health. Our proven Drupal capabilities and experience in communications-led engagement were also highlighted as key drivers for our selection.

PMCC had a fixed date for moving to its new home within the landmark Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Parkville, Melbourne, and the new website needed to launch on move day. A new brand identity had been designed to coincide with the move, and our task was to bring together the brand essence, updated content, new user personas, and reconfigured information architecture into an engaging and easy to use portal.

information portal

PeterMac wanted a modern, usable, and useful website that could service multiple user types. The new architecture needed to cater for recently diagnosed individuals, patients, referring practitioners, researchers, students, and career seekers. Mapping user types to content journeys required multiple stakeholder discussions and ongoing inter-team collaboration. The project also needed to be delivered within a tight budget and timeframe. Detailed planning, timelines, and easy-to-use collaboration tools were deployed to facilitate and track tasks and milestones.

Multiple teams with
a collective aim

Icon commenced preliminary consultation with key user groups prior to starting the rebuild. This strategy proved critical to the success of the project due to its sheer size and complex stakeholder array. The consultation process ensured we were able to successfully drive genuine collaboration between partners, leading to a much-improved user experience coupled with a powerful and highly functional Drupal CMS backend. Following a period of detailed scoping and consultation with key user groups, the complex information architecture was finalised, wireframes were blueprinted and concept designs were locked down. This enabled a smooth run given the tight design and development schedule. The staged project approach ensured requirements were gathered and sequenced in correct order, mitigating time and cost blowouts while ensuring a quality outcome that matched the brief.

An award winning,
best-in-class portal
launched on time
and on budget

PeterMac's new website launched the day of their move to the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Translating new brand into a digital context, and improving navigation and information architecture across desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone, helps the Centre achieve its primary goal of providing the world’s best cancer care. A customised CMS interface makes it easy for site managers to update and modify content and site structure independently and efficiency; and ongoing costs are kept to a minimum given the choice of Drupal, a leading enterprise-level open-source CMS.
