24 April 2019 NDIS wins gold for best government website in 2019

Icon Agency, one of Australia’s leading integrated communications firms, has won gold and silver at the 2019 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards.

The Melbourne-based agency won a Gold Stevie® Award for its work on Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) website and a Silver Stevie® Award for its Yarra Trams Community Safety Campaign: Tram Coach – This is how we tram.

Icon was appointed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) which implements the NDIS, to overhaul the usability of the NDIS website and redevelop the website on Drupal – the leading enterprise-level open source platform.

Icon Agency Founding Director, Christopher Dodds, said “We’re thrilled to have our work recognised internationally and would like to thank the NDIA for partnering with Icon on this incredibly important project.”

“Winning the gold award for ‘Innovation in Government Websites’ for the whole of Asia-Pacific is no easy task. Projects of this scale require a complex mix of user needs analysis, design-led thinking and innovative development. Icon’s user experience team conducted surveys, interviews and prototype testing sessions nationally to ensure NDIS Participants and Providers were listened to and well catered for.”

“We also had a heavy focus on accessibility. The new NDIS website needed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2 AA principals, making it easy for all users to locate web-based information and services. An improved search function was required, and the site's layout needed to adapt based on screen size. Vision impaired users can also easily modify contrast and font size settings via the website’s navigation.” Mr Dodds added.

Stevie® Award judge’s comments included:

“This is an incredibly important service in Australia and looks well-structured and presented in a dynamic flowing method. Great job.”
“Making an app user friendly especially for differently abled users is a tough task and NDIA has done a great job to accomplish that.”
“Designed specifically and carefully for its target audience need, the site is thoughtfully built and creatively implemented.”

Icon Agency also took out silver in the ‘Innovation in Community Relations or Public Service Communications’ category for its campaign, ‘This is how we tram’ on behalf of Yarra Trams.

Yarra Trams appointed Icon Agency in 2017 to create a behaviour change campaign to promote passenger safety to a diverse audience of tram users, with the objective of reducing the number of serious falls across the network.

Icon developed an inclusive, community-focused and proudly Melburnian-central theme: ‘This is how we tram’ and the humorous ‘Tram Coach’ character. The PR launch of the ‘This is how we tram’ campaign gained strong traction, targeting major Victorian regional and metropolitan dailies with a reach of 6.4 million.

The Stevie® Awards are widely recognised to be the world’s premier business awards, conferring recognition for achievement in programs such as The International Business Awards for 17 years. More than 800 nominations from organisations across the Asia-Pacific region were considered this year in categories including corporate communications, public relations, website development, among others.

Icon Agency, along with the NDIS and Yarra Trams will be officially recognised with the honours during the sixth annual gala banquet at the InterContinental Hotel in Singapore, on 31 May.
