ICON launches new wellbeing agency website for veterans and families

ICON is proud to have partnered with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to deliver the new wellbeing agency website, a public digital gateway designed to help veterans and their families find relevant support more easily.

The project was shaped by the findings of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide and the work of the Veterans and Families Assembly, which highlighted the need for clearer, more connected and more trauma-informed support pathways for the veteran community.

The website was designed to act as a trusted front door, helping users navigate a complex wellbeing ecosystem with less friction and greater confidence.

Wellbeing website

Our approach

ICON’s team brought together service design, UX, accessibility, content, visual design and GovCMS Drupal development to deliver a practical, scalable and accessible platform.

The website was designed around a simple principle: make it easier for people to find the right support at the right time. This meant reducing cognitive load, creating clear pathways, supporting search and filtering, and ensuring the experience worked well across desktop, tablet and mobile.

Accessibility was embedded throughout the process, from design and content structure through to front-end development and testing. The site was developed to meet WCAG 2.1 AA requirements and provide a stable, secure and maintainable platform for future growth.

This was also the first major ICON project where we used customised AI tools to automate and improve the front-end development process. This helped our team accelerate component design and development, build more fluid responsive behaviours, identify accessibility improvements earlier, and create a more consistent bridge between design intent and production-ready front-end code.

The outcome

The final website provides a clear, accessible and supportive digital entry point for veterans, families and support networks. It brings together service information, guided pathways, resources and practical navigation tools in a way that is easy to use and ready to evolve as the new agency grows.

For ICON, the project reflects the best of our integrated model: combining strategic understanding, human-centred design, technical delivery and responsible use of AI to create digital services that matter.
